Vision Statement

Maximising Participation, Developing Excellence

  • For all to experience high quality Physical Education (PE), Physical Activity and School Sport that will lead to lifelong participation.
  • To provide an excellent academic route through GCSE and A Level.
  • To continue to be at the forefront of teaching and learning to maximise every student’s potential in the subject.

The Aim of Physical Education

Physical Education at QEHS should inspire all students to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for students to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. We will provide opportunities to compete in sport in order to develop values such as fairness, respect and teamwork.

All lessons are in line with The National Curriculum.

All lessons at QEHS will focus on:

  • Developing competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
  • Making sure all students are physically active for sustained periods of time.
  • Engaging students in competitive sports and activities.
  • Ensuring students lead healthy, active lives.

There are a number of key concepts that underpin the study of PE. Students need to understand these concepts in order to deepen and broaden their knowledge, skills and understanding.

The QEHS PE Department Aims To:

  1.  Ensure Physical Education is enjoyable, fun and challenging.
  2.  Extend each student’s knowledge and understanding and to develop the ability to perform skills with increasing control and fluency.
  3.  Educate every student about their bodies and how to enjoy participating in sport.
  4.  Encourage every student to perform to their ‘Personal Best’.
  5.  Manage classes of students to allow for every child to learn to their full potential.
  6.  Offer a wide variety of opportunities for students to experience within lessons.
  7.  Offer a wide variety of opportunities for students within the extra-curricular curriculum.
  8.  Deliver examination courses to a high standard, allowing students the opportunity to achieve grades which are in line with their own ability.
  9.  Take QEHS PE Department into the public eye through teams and individuals performing to the best of their abilities in a suitable and sporting  manner.
  10.  Encourage students to participate in sport outside of school and to continue to participate in sport on leaving Queen Elizabeth’s High School.

Physical Education (PE)

Pupils should be taught to:

  • Use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in direct competition through team and individual games.
  • Develop their technique and improve their performance in other competitive sports.
  • Take part in outdoor and adventurous activities which present intellectual and physical challenges and be encouraged to work in a team, building on trust and developing skills to solve problems, either individually or as a group.
  • Analyse their performances compared to previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.
  • Take part in competitive sports and activities outside school through community links or sports clubs.

Importance of Physical Education

PE and sport have an important role to play in raising standards and narrowing the achievement gap. Research has shown how placing PE and sport at the heart of a broad and balanced curriculum can improve attendance, behaviour and attainment. PE and sport build self-esteem, teamwork and leadership skills. PE and sport are also important because they can help build an inclusive society, raise levels of participation in sport after young people leave school and positively affect the health of the nation.

Physical Education at QEHS has three key strands:

  • Healthy Active Lifestyles - Lifelong Interventions
  • School Sport - Competition, Coaching, Clubs and Commitment
  • Physical Education - Learning, PE for ALL

As a department we place a huge emphasis on the physical and emotional well-being of our students, as we strive to promote a lifelong love for physical activity. Our primary focus is on the three key strands within our PE curriculum and the Physical, Social and Emotional Well-Being of our students, with the learner at the centre of our model.
